2009-10 Balladyna

2D4K6165 Kostryn i Balladyna

The tale of murderous young Balladyna has captivated audiences for decades. A Polish literary classic written by Juliusz Slowacki in 1834, Balladyna encapsulates the ultimate struggle for power and fame. This work carries a very clear moral message about crime and punishment. Sooner or later all crimes are recognized and punished, if not by people then by God himself (the final scene of Balladyna). But Slowacki’s romantic drama is not only atrocities and crimes. It is also, in the words of the author an “old ballad” – a fairy tale – going back to Slavic legends and the magic of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In Scena 98’s rendition, Balladyna was performed a total of four times, including at the Adelaide PolArt Festival in 2009.

Premiere:   11 December 2009, Cracovia Club, Perth
